I've been going to rendezvous' for years but only as a spectator. Now, I think I have the fever ! I've been thinking about jumpin' in with both feet, but thought I would get some insight first.
What would be some good advice for a newbie ? What equipment to get. Where to get it. Ideas for personas. Good books for historical accuracy.
I need a good base to start on. Any information would be appreciated.

Jay

Welcome to a fun experience. I guess the first thing would be to go to a vous and ask the particapants their ideas. You may have already done that so I would say your next step would be some sort of lodge. Think about what kind of tent you may want because I would bet that 75% of the campers either upgraded or got a different type of tent since they started. I have a pyramid tent and found out later that I couldn't camp at some rendezvous (French and Indian War for one) because it wasn't period correct. A couple companies that sell canvas tents are Red Hawk and Panther Primatives. Both have sites on the web. Then you need a grill or spit to cook on. Panther has that covered also. There are quite a few other sites that sell every thing you need but I would wait until after I've camped a few times to see what the most important things you need. I'm sure that most rendezvousers started with very little and then added on as they went to more and more encampments. I don't know if I have helped very much but I'm sure that there will be many more replies on this site to your questions. Have fun.

i have been out the vous for several years and am doing it again . , but alot of the basics have stayed the same. dont be afraid to ask questions. seems like everyone likes to help. if you like someone idea u, use it. even change some of it to fit your needs. i think we have all done that. the most important thing is to have a good time, it doesnt matter how much you have or dont have. sit by the fire, tell some stories, make some friends, and just enjoy it. maybe see you at a few. be safe .

I have went to reply to this thread 3 times I think and just haven't come up with the words so here it goes.

Don had the right idea in go to the event with what you have and enjoy yourself. If you need something just beg, borrow or buy it.

You will find out the majority of the people at these events are very friendly and enjoy talking so you can have you good conversation anywhere you turn.
Most are willing to share a chair and if there is pot of coffee on a cup of something to hot to drink.

The only word of caution I have is in the shelter, make an educated decision on the shelter. I would start with something simple that would blend in with the persona that you are shooting for.

One thing I would like to stress is if you NEED something, ie: break something, need to repair something, running short on something, DON'T be afraid to ask, people will help you when you are in a bind.

Hope to see you at an event, make sure you stop by and introduce yourself.

I went thru a a time in my life when I didn't rondy. I even thought of selling all my stuff. But I kept it all and got the bug again. I am so glad I didn't sell out. When I started, I bought a small wedge. I was going by myslef mostly. I think that has alot to do with it. If your going as a family and have alot more hands on getting a tent in the air, you can go bigger. I now have a hunters tent and still am going alone. I have been at it for about 15 years and I still have a shopping list in my wallet. When you are out, look at how others are doing things. If you like the way they are doing it, copy them. With this hobby, its not all about secrets. If you have a question, just ask someone. If they don't know the answer, i'm sure they can help find it. Don't get in a hurry and just go on a buying spree. You might end up with alot of stuff that just doesn't work for you.Just like my first camp kitchen, it was way too much for me to handle. I target certain rondy's as shopping trips. Those are Vincinnes, Ft De Chartes, and Ft Massac. The nice thing about it, or bad if you spend too much money, is that the first two are a week apart. Hope this helps you a bit.
