Well its been a good month since I began my quest for info...been doing tons of research....and there are a few walls keep comming up against..so if someone out there can contact me has time to listen to a rookie so I can be ready to participate in the new year I would greatly appreciate it.
I live in the st louis missouri area, and have contacted many of the groups and individuals that I have found on the internet but haven't got any response?
So far we have collected a few good items for our use shoes, clothing, some cookware and utensils, blankets and skins..and I think it is all period....but there are a few items I want to get for use that I dont want to by to then find they arent acceptable..
like what jars can I use say for canning.... or storage...
questions like that....
I am a pastry chef/cook by profession and wish to use that aspect of what I do when in camp. There are s many awesome things that I have read and saved that I feel I might be able to do, and in most of my reading have found evidence thatsupport my desire. Officers wives entertaining or cooking for the troops, women cooking in travel through the frontier, rendevous where the shop owners loaded wagons up and encamped for periods of time for sales to the trappers and hunters.
What I feel I need.LOL.... it possibly someone who might participate in the events surrounding st louis who could tell me how the organizers would best accept this sort of persona.
What I might need to do to actually participate in food sales during an event, or weather I could only do demonstrations. of course we are hoping to fund our time at these events.
As you can see I have many questions, and have recieved little response...none from the immediate area....
I have seen so many different things at rendevous'....and still hear another...like made n china stickers on products sold...or someone opening up a store bought package of hamburger meat or items packaged in plastic baggies...or food put on plastic being sold....that I dont know were to draw the line for myself...
thanks fo listening...really...I hope someone might help me or give me a solid lead to some help or someone t contact...we are trying very hard to start off right

Hi LouAnne, I'm Matt the techincal Booshway around here, I am just sure what you mean by "yellow writing". If you could pinpoint where you are having an issue reading I would be glad to look at it. Although on my display there is no yellow text. It maybe how your monitor is displaying the colors.

Thanks for the input
Matt

Welcome to the group, Louanne. I'll see if I can help you out as far as what to buy or get. I'll post links to sites that have these things at the bottom of the page.

Cookwares:

Cast iron- with 3 legs, C-shaped ears and a lip at the rim. None of the Dutch ovens have these lips, only the pots. If you can find a skillet or Dutch oven with a lid, that would be even better for cooking bread, pies/cakes, etc. Avoid Lodge, Wagner and other modern makers if you want authenticity. I just now picked up a small 1/2 gallon pot for $6.00 at an antique shop!!

Tin- Get tin cups, not the blue speckleware. It doesn't appear until about 1860. Bowls, plates and wash pans would be helpful if you have a family or big camp. James Townsend&Son sells a 3 gal. tin bucket for water.

Natural materials- Bowls or plates can also be of gourds or carve one from wood. Gourds were also used for water containers, and probably anything else you wanted. I use a couple for beans, rice and corn. After they're filled, I plug the top (gourd top, cork or wood), then seal around it with beeswax.

Brass & copper- Both are correct, and will last you for a long time.

Utensils- Made of wood, horn, pewter, iron/steel and even silver was used throughout the fur trade. I made a small gourd spoon from the top of a gourd handle, and one from a buffalo horn. Forks should have two tines instead of three. Eating off the knife (similar to a butter knife) seemed to be common practice. The fork was used for pushing the food onto the knife. These were made with bone handles, maybe even horn or wood.

I think that's about it for now. I'm probably leaving something out, and if I am feel free to contact me.

Also, there's a bunch of pictures I posted in the pictures link on here, so that should give you an idea of what to get. Although a lot of it is 18th century stuff.

thanks...( manI had to really darken my screen to read this...lol...technology)
How about crockery...
and what about reflector ovens and roasters...I read much about these items in historical books...also earthen ovens...all date to the correct era...even valley forge has an earthen oven...huge....that was used to bake the troops bread
I also read a cute paper on how often the wibves of men in service, and women displaced by the wars who followed the troops for safty would have in tow a piece of their china..usually a tea cup...they would get together and have tea kind of a way to maintain some of their sanity...
I also read that one of the most popular items sold during mountain men rendevous was brass rings..most popular with indian women..who would purchase them and in the wearing protrayed the status of their husband. I also read that one of the central effects of the rendevous was the sale and purchase of food and often at a high profit.
I have purchased most of what you spoke of. as well as tools to make our own wood bowls...though I know to make them correctly welllllll wow it takes some time....
I am also looking into historicaly correctLOL herbs and seeds...I am an avid gardener and have been time lining foods...I am saving all my research so I can validate historically what I produce.... and what I have found so far is that the fare delivered was totally dependant on the skill of the cook
So I suppose the next move I ned to make is to actually try someof this stuff out in the back yard LOL....
I sure hope i get to participate in the near future...
anyone going to anything soon...love to run into someone and say hey...
I dont think Iwill be able to participate in the dupo one...argh work...butI would love to drop in for a visit just to meet a few of ya....
again thanks....I really appreciate your response
