Most vous' are open attendance, I don't know of any around here that are club only. If there are they will be marked on Gatherins as an invitational.

Depending on the size of the vous there could be anywhere from a couple of vendors to 50. We did a vous last year with 10-15 camps and 2 of those were vendors and there was a blacksmith in there also.

hmm... weekday events are rare around here (Metro St. Louis)
I know that Gatherins has early setup on Monday or Tuesday for their event on the next weekend.

The events I attend usually don't have a camp fee but sometimes it is around $10 to cover johnnies and stuff.
Shoot prizes usually are $10-15 value but you will get something back and sometimes 2-3 somethings.

I haven't heard any cases of theft in the camps but I am sure that it happens, more to the vendors than campers.
I will state it again, the only dump question is the one not asked.
Hope this helps. |

Welcome to the Board!
If you're looking to buy items for rendezvous, look under a reply I made to the thread "Need some mentoring". Like others who first started out, I had friends that helped me in my buying, and who and where to get these items from. Its just as easy to do it right, as it is to do it wrong.
Here's a few links to help you get started with.
www.scarletscarab.com - Blankets, etc.
www.trackofthewolf.com - Guns, camp items, etc.
www.taxidermy.net - Various hides.
www.csa-dixie.com/villagetinsmith/a.htm - Tin ware.
www.nps.gov/fous/tradegoods.html - Various Fur Trade items.
www.braintan.com - Braintanned hides; deer, elk, buffalo, moose, etc.
There's other links that I've posted for sutlers and Mountain Men sites, and even one for Women of the Fur Trade. They may be on the Links page. The American Mountain Man site has some really good trade lists on there, and will be able to help you to decide what was had. I just wish those prices were the same as they were back then! LOL
Don't forget to check out yard/garage sales, antique shops and goodwill stores. I know several folks who have found wool blankets, tin pans, cast iron, wood bowls, and other items. I never have that kind of luck though.
If you have any questions, feel free to email me. Good luck!

stormcloud,
What is your general location? There aren't many 'vous that are during the week around Metro St. Louis but I do know that sometimes people setup well in advance of the event (sometimes a week before hand). I could hook you up with someone during the week that would be glad to talk to you maybe even myself. |

| stormcloud, my woman ( no disrespect intended, but she is ) is from Detroit..she literaly love it.... A warning , this is very addicting, most folks i run with will ditch work in a moment to go to even a 5 or 6 camp 'vous. also , do your homework...know who, and what u want to portray, it'll save u a lot of money, from buyin' out of period stuff. And for Thieves.....just let us catch em...no, really..everybody is family at the 'vous, at least around here. u steal from one of us , u'r stealin' from all of us...Justice will be quick! |

Hey Stormcloud,
Just a note, a couple years ago I left nice tomahawk laying when I went to get water one morning. I couldn't remember where I left it and was looking all over for it. After a while I gave it up as lost. Next morning, I went to get water and there it was, right where I left it. A lot of vouers got water in between and not a one thought about making that hawk theirs. That's the way they are. |

alright thanks again for the response. my general area is detroit area(like pocats woman-still no disrespect), but obviously im gonna have be willing to travel, lol. im gonna do my best not to ditch work, for i only work on the weekends ( i work a straight 40-48 hrs and off rest of week) therfore a ditch rersults in a whole weeks paycheak gone, ouch! As for the perioid im thinking about staying with just pre-1840s for now. i got a real drawing to mountain men and alot of native american beliefs. that way i can get into it and as i go i can make a wiser choice on experiance, even though this may be the long expensive way but it will give me realitive immeate results (thats one bad thing about todays world i fall victum to imedate gratifacation. maybe that will change.) Besides that might fit my dream of being grizzley adams, ( with the execption of no hunting) lol. My other lifes dream is to go back to the basics and live off the land, ya know the whole self reliant thing with in reason. i am spoiled as far as living goes i like indoor plumbing, power (though passive energy may work) and the internet.
anyway as i ramble on, its real good to hear the comments on theives, and seadog im glad ya got your tomahawk back, thats real comforting and assuring and definatly the type of bond/brotherhood/atmosphere im looking for. thanks again! |
