Recently I was purusing over a web site, http://blh.homestead.com, on getting started in living history. I happened to be reading over the women's clothing area for my fiance', doing a little research, so that she would have herself a period outfit. I am familiar w/ the clothing basics (chemise, bodice, petticoat, cap..etc.) however they mention on this site the do's and don'ts. On one of the don'ts it made mention:

"DON'T wear a sleeveless, unbonded vest-like bodice with nothing over it. These garments are totally undocumented and sold by merchants simply because they are easy to make and to generically fit."

What do you think?? Are they incorrect on their statement that it is not documented??

I am going to probably go get one none the less but I was looking for any one elses take on this, don't statement.

I am no expert so I am not going to take a stab at it but I would drop a note to Pare_Bowlegs about this and see what he knows.

I PMed Pare and he responded helpfully as usual. When he doesn't know the answer he knows where to start looking at least.

Here is his response
Quote:
I'm not sure on the question about clothing. He might try doing a Google search for Colonial Woemn's Clothing. There's a book by Beth Gilgun, that I can't seem to recall right now, but she covers just about everything for women's clothing from this time period. I think it might be "Tidings of the 18th century".

One person who knows what she is making, is Michelle (last name unknown), who owns Sew It Seams in Colorado. I can't seem to find her web site right now though. Another one is www.bakertownsutlers.com. Check the Links at the Historical Trekking site, too. There should be something he's looking for.

Don't start sewing or buying yet!! Check with these ladies on Jon Hagee's board. They can be a big help, I'm sure.

Good luck!
